In Bergen County, 68% of high school students feel they lack practical skills such as budgeting or basic home repairs, while only 22% of schools offer standalone life skills courses. At the same time, 40% of U.S. high schools eliminated woodworking or culinary programs between 2000-2020, leaving a gap that jeopardizes teen independence and employability.
The MERK Life Lessons Learning Centers—a nonprofit initiative born from 8 years of Scouts BSA community service-is the answer. We are transforming our proven disaster-relief kitchen model into a state-of-the-art educational hub, teaching 500+ students annually the hands-on skills schools no longer provide. Through workshops in carpentry, cooking, auto maintenance, and financial literacy, we don't just teach—we empower.
The MERK Life Lessons Learning Centers aims to expand and empower high school students with essential life skills, enabling them to thrive in a complex world, regardless of their chosen career path. The MERK Life Lessons Learning Centers strive to be the leading provider of hands-on, real-world skills education, equipping students with the knowledge and confidence to become resourceful, self-sufficient adults.
